Birches students experience reading every day in a variety of ways. During Reading Workshop, children work on their own reading goals with “just right” books and supporting activities. Early readers--like this student--may be listening to a book on tape and following the words, or doing phonics work with a teacher. Transitional readers are working on decoding strategies, gaining practice and exposure to new types of literature. Fluent readers are applying the strategies they know while also completing journals, book projects, and reader response logs.
