Fostering a strong understanding of numbers, and the relationships among them, is a core tenet of the mathematics curriculum at Birches. This poster shows how Kindergartners begin to understand combinations of basic addition facts. By creating these "ladders" with the numbers, they recognize that within each grid there is a finite number with which to work. Therefore, 5+0 will always have the same outcome as 4+1 or 3+2, and so on. Although this is a fairly challenging concept to grasp, the students enjoy creating the ladders which help establish the groundwork for future addition work and number manipulation.
