What do you do when you come upon a bug, plant or rock that you do not recognize? What do you do when your child just has to understand it better? This Birches student examined the insect with his parents and they guessed it was a molting cicada. But they were wrong!
That's when it was time to turn to the Birches community. A few emails later the mystery was solved. It's a female broad necked root borer! Her pointy ovipositor is getting ready to deposit many eggs into the ground and her yellow egg sack is so large that it is sticking out!
