Juvenile Red-Tailed Hawk

A Birches student and his father arrived today to water the Birches garden.  At first they saw hay bales in the field near the garden.  Then they encountered a juvenile red-tailed hawk sitting on the curved branch above the garden gate!  The hawk is a friend to gardeners.  He preys on animals that eat garden vegetables--chipmunks, mice, and rabbits.  The hawk seemed almost tame.  He let the boy and his father come quite close before flying off to a nearby tree.
