Geometry with Marshmallows

Birches students have been studying geometry for the past few weeks. This week, we brought all the children together in one math class to create 3D shapes using toothpicks and marshmallows. The students resisted eating the marshmallows in order to create quite elaborate structures. Some started with flat designs and built up, others created cubes and pyramids and began to explore connecting vertices to make new shapes. These two Kindergartners started building houses--"A cube and a pyramid!" one exclaimed--and continued to build up and out. The project was a great way to let all levels of students explore geometry and the structure of shapes and their faces and vertices.
