Making a Tortilla de Patata (Spanish Omelette)!

Last week the Kindergartners and 1st Graders began their trip to Spanish speaking countries with a visit to Spain, the homeland of their teacher. After locating Spain on the globe, we took a plane across the Atlantic Ocean. Once we landed, we headed to a restaurant for a cooking lesson and learned how to make a typical Spanish snack, la tortilla de patata or Spanish omelette. After making this tortilla, we all enjoyed eating it!

Below is the recipe in both Spanish and English with a video showing you how to flip Spanish omelettes. Buen provecho!

Receta de tortilla de patata:

6-8 huevos

7-8 patatas

1 cebolla

aceite de oliva para freir

6-8 eggs

7-8 potatoes

1 onion

olive oil for sauteing

  1. Chop the onion very small, and deep-fry in olive oil in a pan. Drain olive oil and leave aside.
  2. Slice potatoes, add olive oil to pan (to almost cover potatoes), and fry until done.
  3. Mix eggs in a bowl, add salt. Add the potatoes and onion to the bowl, but not the olive oil.
  4. Put a bit of olive oil in the pan to make sure it won't stick and add the mixture from the bowl. Cover and cook one side and, after around 15 minutes, flip it over and cook the other side. Please be careful when flipping... that's the most difficult part!
