Grades 2-3 Teacher 

Birches School seeks an enthusiastic, collaborative co-teacher for a 2nd/3rd-grade combined classroom beginning in August 2026.

Summary of Position: The Grades 2-3 Teacher position pairs two experienced teachers with a strong desire for collaboration in curriculum design and co-teaching in a mixed-grade elementary classroom. The position allows dynamic teachers to partner in the design and implementation of thematic units, with concentrations in reading, writing, social studies, science, and mathematics, that cultivate students' academic and social development.

Birches seeks teaching faculty who demonstrate an interest in fully participating in the life and activities of a highly engaging elementary and middle school and who will help further Birches’ mission. Successful candidates will exhibit a great work ethic, cultural competency, strong written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to inspire young people.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Model and instill a love of learning and inquiry among students

  • Co-lead student-centered classroom instruction and activities daily in reading, writing, social studies, science, and mathematics

  • Co-design thematic curriculum based on nature-based, social justice, and student interest themes

  • Implement social curriculum based on the Responsive Classroom model, helping students problem solve and use appropriate language when interacting with one another

  • Differentiate the curriculum based on student needs and performance with a flexible and engaging curriculum

  • Monitor student performance using informal and formal assessments throughout the school year, including student goal setting, progress reports, 1:1 conferences, rubrics, reading inventories, etc.

  • Communicate important changes or observations with parents/guardians on an ongoing basis throughout the school year

  • Possess flexibility, eagerness for growth, and passion for the philosophy of the school

  • Attend routine staff meetings and cover regular lunch and recess duties

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree, preferably in education or a related field. A master’s degree in education or a closely related field is strongly preferred.

  • Minimum of three years of experience working with elementary students 

  • Demonstrated experience with multicultural and anti-bias teaching strategies and materials that reflect cultural competence
